Bangue Island is an uninhabited islet in the Bazaruto Archipelago, located off the coast of Inhambane Province and forming part of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, established in 1971. The island is characterized by its pristine nature, white sandy beaches, and a complex dune structure that is crucial for the ecological stability of the region. Geologically, Bangue consists of sandy sediments shaped by oceanic currents over millennia. Historically, the island was hardly used by humans due to its remoteness, which contributed to the preservation of its original biodiversity. The surrounding sea is part of a protected marine ecosystem considered one of the last refuges for the endangered dugong. The flora is limited to salt-tolerant coastal shrubs and grasses, while the fauna is marked by numerous seabird colonies and sea turtles that lay their eggs here. In Mozambique's modern conservation strategy, Bangue plays a key role as a reference area for intact coral reefs and marine food chains. Visitor access is strictly regulated to minimize the ecological footprint on the delicate ecosystem.
