Závora
Závora is a quiet find in the Inhambane province, primarily famous for the spectacular Závora Reef. Divers from all over the world come here to observe manta rays, whale sharks, and humpback whales during the season. The rugged coastline features dramatic views and pristine sandy beaches, good for those seeking solitude. The most distinctive landmark is the lighthouse built in 1910, which still watches over the coast. The surroundings are characterized by inland lakes and sand dunes that invite exploration. Local gastronomy is simple but delicious, with freshly caught prawns and grilled fish dominating the menus. Getting there is best done with a 4x4 vehicle via the EN1 from Inharrime, as the sandy tracks can be challenging. The best time to visit is from June to September, when the weather is pleasantly mild and the chance for whale sightings is highest. Závora gives an authentic Mozambican experience far from mass tourism.
