Cuamba is a dynamic city located in the southern part of Niassa Province, serving as the primary economic engine for this northern Mozambican region. Established in the early 20th century as a station for the Niassa Company, it was elevated to city status in 1971 under the name Nova Freixo. Its significance is largely due to its strategic position on the Nacala Logistics Corridor, where the railway connects landlocked Malawi and the interior of Mozambique to the Indian Ocean. Cuamba acts as the hub for a productive agricultural belt, focusing on cotton, tobacco, and maize cultivation. The city also hosts a campus of the Catholic University of Mozambique, making it an important regional center for higher education. Recently, the city has experienced rapid urbanization and population growth driven by trade and infrastructure investments. The climate is tropical, characterized by hot summers and a distinct dry season that influences local agricultural cycles.
