Buir Lake is a large freshwater lake in eastern Mongolia, situated along the border with the People's Republic of China. It lies within the Menen Steppe basin and, with a surface area of about 615 square kilometers, it is the largest lake in eastern Mongolia. The lake is primarily fed by the Khalkhin Gol river and drains into Hulun Lake via the Orchun Gol. Buir Lake is famous for its exceptional fish stocks, making it one of the most significant centers for commercial fishing in Mongolia. Ecologically, it is a crucial habitat for waterfowl and is protected under the Ramsar Convention. Historically, the area surrounding the lake is noted for the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in 1939, a decisive military encounter leading up to World War II. Its shallow shores and sandy beaches make it a potential destination for local tourism, while maintaining its water levels remains a top ecological priority.
