Dariganga
Dariganga is a unique cultural landscape in southeastern Mongolia where the Gobi desert meets the steppe. The region is famous for its more than 200 extinct volcanoes, including the sacred Shiliin Bogd mountain, from whose summit one can see as far as China. Another attraction is Ganga Lake, where thousands of swans gather in autumn during their migration. Culturally, Dariganga is renowned for its artisans, especially silversmiths, whose work is highly valued throughout Mongolia. The area also hosts numerous ancient stone statues, known as 'balbals', testifying to past cultures. The combination of volcanic geology, sand dunes, and rich cultural heritage makes Dariganga one of the most fascinating yet less-visited destinations in the country. Access is via Baruun-Urt. The best time to visit is late summer and autumn when temperatures are mild and the swans rest at the lake. Visitors should try the local cuisine and look for traditional silver jewelry, which is often still produced in family-run workshops.
