Baruun-Urt, whose name means western forest in Mongolian, lies at 981 metres above sea level on Mongolia's eastern steppe. It has been the capital of Sükhbaatar Province since 1942, has around 16,000 inhabitants and sits 555 kilometres southeast of Ulaanbaatar in one of the world's most pristine steppe landscapes. Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) migrate across these plains in herds of up to 30,000 animals, one of the last great land-mammal migrations on Earth. About 18 kilometres west lies the Tsagaan Tolgoi zinc mine, one of Asia's largest, opened in 2007 with Chinese capital and producing roughly 95,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate annually. The region is renowned for horse breeding and supplies many champions for the Naadam festival. A paved road has linked the town to the capital since 2018. The flat steppe is dotted with small salt lakes, favoured stopovers of migrating birds in spring and autumn.
