Pelagos Sanctuary (Monaco)

Weather…

The Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals is a transborder protected area established through an agreement between France, Italy, and Monaco. Signed in 1999 and entering into force in 2002, the sanctuary covers approximately 87,500 square kilometers of the Corso-Liguro-Provençal Basin. It was created to protect cetaceans from human-induced threats such as pollution, noise, and accidental captures in fishing gear. The area is home to diverse species, including fin whales, sperm whales, and several types of dolphins that find abundant food sources in these waters. Research within the sanctuary focuses on population dynamics and the impact of maritime traffic on marine mammal health. It represents a pioneering model of international cooperation for the preservation of high-seas biodiversity in the Mediterranean. Management is shared by the three signatory nations.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for whale and dolphin watching in the Pelagos Sanctuary is from May to September, when marine animals come near the coast to feed. Summer gives the highest sighting rates, but many species are still active in early autumn.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning excursions shortly after sunrise promise the calmest sea and most active animals. Late afternoon is also often successful, as animals come closer to the surface again.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a minimum distance of 100 metres from whales and dolphins to avoid disturbing them. Motorboats must travel slowly and carefully - chasing animals is legally prohibited.
🎒
What to bring
Bring binoculars to spot animals from a distance - a camera with telephoto lens is also useful. Warm clothing for the morning breeze and sun protection for midday hours are essential.
🧭
Getting there
The Pelagos Sanctuary stretches between the French, Monegasque and Italian coasts. Most boat excursions depart from Nice, Monaco or Sanremo - book a guided tour in advance, especially during peak season.
🦌
What to expect
Whale watching requires patience and a calm sea - even on good days sightings may be absent. Plan several hours on the water and enjoy the marine atmosphere even without immediate encounters.
