Fontvieille Plateau (Monaco)

Weather…

The Plateau de Fontvieille is a prime example of modern land reclamation, representing an almost entirely artificial relief structure in southwest Monaco. During the 1960s and 1970s, under the vision of Prince Rainier III, approximately 22 hectares of land were reclaimed from the sea to provide much-needed space for industry, housing, and recreation. The plateau is characterized by its precise horizontal alignment, standing in stark contrast to the natural, vertical cliff faces of the adjacent Monaco-Ville. Technical implementation involved sinking massive concrete caissons into water up to 40 meters deep, which were subsequently filled with rock and earth. Today, the plateau houses the principality's second harbor, the Stade Louis II, and a heliport. Geomorphologically, it forms a stable artificial platform secured by advanced seawalls against the erosive power of the Mediterranean, expanding Monaco's total land area by roughly 20 percent.
