The viewpoint at Place du Palais features one of the most spectacular panoramas of the Principality of Monaco and the French Riviera. From this elevated vantage point on "The Rock," visitors can look directly down at the modern district of Fontvieille to the west and Port Hercule to the east. This strategic location was used for defense for centuries, as evidenced by the cannons from the reign of Louis XIV that are still positioned there today. These cast-iron artillery pieces serve as a reminder of the time when Monaco was a contested fortress that had to maintain its independence against powerful neighbors. The viewpoint is also the first-rate spot to observe the daily changing of the guard by the Carabiniers du Prince, which takes place precisely at 11:55 AM in front of the palace. The view extends over the steep cliffs down to the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, and on clear days, it gives a glimpse as far as the Italian coast. The combination of military history, royal ceremony, and natural beauty makes this location an essential destination for every visitor to Monaco. The stone balustrades are good for capturing the striking contrast between the medieval old town and the modern yacht harbors.
