Fontvieille Promontory (Monaco)

Weather…

The Fontvieille Promontory is a prime example of modern land reclamation and radical alteration of the coastal relief in the Principality of Monaco. Originally, this area consisted of a narrow coastline and steep underwater rocks before large-scale infilling began in 1966 under the reign of Prince Rainier III. This mammoth project reclaimed approximately 32 hectares of new land, increasing Monaco's total area by about 20 percent. Today, the relief is largely artificially leveled but structured by modern architecture and terraced gardens. The construction required sinking massive concrete caissons into water depths of up to 40 meters to create a stable foundation against sea currents. Today, the plateau hosts the Fontvieille district with residential complexes, industrial facilities, the Stade Louis II, and a marina.
