Spélugues Hill (Monaco)

Weather…

The Colline des Spélugues is a prominent elevation in the Principality of Monaco, globally recognized today as the site of the Monte-Carlo district. Before the mid-19th century, this limestone hill was a barren area covered with olive and citrus trees, named after the numerous natural caves found within its cliffs. The radical transformation of the landscape began in 1861 under Prince Charles III, who sought to secure the state's economic future through high-end tourism. With the construction of the Casino and the Hotel de Paris starting in 1863, the hill's topography was permanently altered by extensive terracing and urban development. Today, the elevation is almost entirely concealed beneath luxury architecture, yet it remains the topographical backbone of Monaco's most exclusive district. The geological composition of Jurassic limestone required complex engineering feats during development to ensure the stability of monumental structures built directly onto the steep slopes.
