Rock of Monaco (Monaco)

Weather…

The Rock of Monaco is a massive 62-meter-tall limestone monolith that forms the oldest district of the Principality, known as Monaco-Ville. Historically, this natural fortress provided a strategic advantage for ancient Phoenician and Roman settlers due to its steep cliffs and commanding views. In 1297, Francesco Grimaldi captured the fortress on the Rock, establishing the long-standing rule of the Grimaldi family. Today, the plateau houses the Prince's Palace, the official residence of the sovereign, and the Saint Nicholas Cathedral. Geologically, the Rock is composed of Jurassic limestone that drops vertically into the Mediterranean Sea on three sides. It also features the renowned Oceanographic Museum, which was masterfully built into the cliffside in 1910. The Rock remains the administrative and ceremonial heart of Monaco, preserving a medieval layout of narrow streets and historic architecture amidst the modern expansion of the surrounding city-state.
