Lower Prut Reserve (Moldova)

Weather…

The Lower Prut Scientific Reserve was established in 1991 in southern Moldova, within the Cahul District, covering an area of 1,691 hectares. The centerpiece of the reserve is Lake Beleu, a natural lake fed by the Prut River, famous for its exceptionally rich birdlife. Since 2000, the area has been recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance and is part of the UNESCO 'Lower Prut' Biosphere Reserve. It serves as a critical stopover and nesting site for migratory birds, including great white pelicans, cormorants, and herons. The vegetation consists primarily of reed beds, willow trees, and aquatic plants adapted to the fluctuating water levels. Protecting this wetland is essential for the ecological balance of the entire Danube region.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The Lower Prut Reserve is spectacular in spring (March-May) during bird migration, when thousands of waterbirds rest at Lake Beleu. Autumn (September-November) also features high species diversity.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is best for birding, when birds become active after the night. Late afternoon they return in large flocks to roosting sites on the lake.
📜
Etiquette
Entering reed beds and islands is prohibited to avoid disturbing breeding colonies. Noise and sudden movements should be avoided as they scare the birds.
🎒
What to bring
A high-quality 10x42 binocular is essential for identifying waterbirds. A waterproof camera with telephoto lens is recommended for photographing shy birds from a distance.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is accessible by car on an asphalt road from the city of Cahul. A visitor center at the entrance provides information and maps of observation points.
🦌
What to expect
Birding requires a lot of patience - it often takes a while for birds to show. Find a quiet spot on the lakeshore and wait.
