Lower Prut Plain (Moldova)

Weather…

The Lower Prut Plain is a flat, water-rich region in the extreme southwest of Moldova, extending along the lower reaches of the Prut River to its confluence with the Danube. The relief is characterized by a wide floodplain interspersed with numerous lakes, marshes, and oxbows. The most significant lake in the region is Lake Beleu, which is part of the 'Lower Prut' Biosphere Reserve. The plain consists mainly of alluvial deposits accumulated over millennia through regular river flooding. Geomorphologically, the area is almost entirely flat, with only minor elevation differences, making it a vital sanctuary for migratory birds and diverse aquatic flora and fauna. Despite its low elevation, the region plays a crucial role in flood protection and the ecological balance of the Danube Delta. Historically, the plain served as a strategic border zone between various empires.
