Sierra Gorda (Mexico)

Weather…

The Sierra Gorda (also known as Sierra de Querétaro) is a biosphere reserve in northern Querétaro and represents one of Mexico's most ecologically diverse areas. Due to its complex topography with deep canyons and high peaks, it hosts nearly all of the country's ecosystems, from semi-deserts to humid cloud forests. Geologically, the region is marked by karst phenomena such as the impressive Sótano del Barro, one of the world's deepest natural pits. Historically, the Sierra Gorda is famous for the five Franciscan missions built in the 18th century under the leadership of Junípero Serra, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. These missions testify to the late colonization of this challenging terrain. Today, the Sierra is a pioneer in sustainable tourism and conservation, with local communities actively involved in protecting biodiversity, including the jaguar and the military macaw.
