The dunes are typically reached from the southwestern coastal routes of the country. Exploring them deeply requires highly experienced drivers capable of manually adjusting tire pressure for deep sand.

The dry, relatively cooler season from November to February is generally considered the optimal time. Summer months bring scorching, dangerous surface sand temperatures that prevent any walking.

The landscape is overwhelmingly dominated by constantly shifting, deep, and powdery sand structures. Climbing these massive moving dunes is physically demanding and provides poor traction for boots.

What to bring

Cars are very strictly parked only on the firmer, harder ground at the extreme edges of the dune fields. Entering the deep shifting sands with standard vehicles will inevitably lead to getting inextricably bogged down.
