Delimara Power Station (Malta)

Weather…

The Delimara Power Station in Marsaxlokk is Malta's primary electricity generation facility, critical for the nation's energy security. The station has been developed in several phases since 1992 to replace the obsolete power plant in Marsa. In recent years, the facility underwent a significant modernization process, converting its operations from heavy fuel oil to liquefied natural gas (LNG). This transition has drastically reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality in the surrounding southern region. For years, its most recognizable feature was the 150-meter-high chimney, which was demolished in 2017 following the switch to cleaner energy. The site now incorporates advanced gas turbines and a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) for LNG anchored in Marsaxlokk Bay. As a key strategic infrastructure asset, Delimara is indispensable for both industrial growth and the daily lives of the Maltese population.
