Mphunzi Mountain

Mphunzi Mountain is a massive granite inselberg rising dramatically from the Dedza plains in central Malawi. As a vital component of the UNESCO-listed Chongoni Rock Art Area, the mountain is home to eight distinct rock shelters containing some of the region's most significant prehistoric paintings. These red-pigment depictions are largely associated with the Chewa people and their ancestral Nyau secret society, representing masked ceremonies and initiation rites. Geologically, Mphunzi is composed of ancient Precambrian intrusive rocks, having been shaped by millions of years of weathering into its characteristic domed profile. Reaching an elevation of over 1,600 meters, the mountain provides an expansive vantage point overlooking the surrounding agricultural landscape.
