Chencherere Rock Art (Malawi)

Weather…

Chencherere Rock Art is a standout archaeological site within the Chongoni UNESCO World Heritage area in Malawi. Located near the town of Dedza, the site consists of several rock shelters adorned with paintings that span centuries of cultural history. The older, red paintings are attributed to the Batwa hunter-gatherers, while the more recent white motifs reflect the agrarian society and spiritual practices of the Chewa people. Of particular significance are the depictions related to the Gule Wamkulu, a ritual secret society that continues to be a central part of Chewa identity and cosmology today. Reaching the shelters involves a short trek through a scenic landscape of granite outcrops and indigenous woodland, offering a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Chencherere serves as a vital record of the human experience in Central Africa, providing visitors with a profound connection to the ancient traditions, ceremonies, and artistic expressions of the region's inhabitants.
