Chongoni Rock Art Area (Malawi)

Weather…

The Chongoni Rock Art Area, located in central Malawi, is a globally significant archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2006. Spanning 126 square kilometers, it contains 127 identified rock art locations, the richest concentration of such art in Central Africa. The paintings represent a fascinating transition between two cultures: the earlier red-ochre paintings were produced by the Batwa Pygmies, a hunter-gatherer group, during the Late Stone Age. The later white paintings are the work of the Chewa agriculturalists, dating from the Iron Age into the modern era. Uniquely, the Chewa art is deeply connected to their living traditions, depicting symbols used in female initiation ceremonies and the secret Nyau society. These granite hills near Dedza served as sacred spaces for millennia, and the surviving images provide invaluable insights into the social and religious evolution of the region's inhabitants. The site is a major destination for cultural tourism, offering a profound connection to Africa's prehistoric past.
