Elephant Marsh is a sprawling wetland ecosystem located in the lower Shire Valley of southern Malawi, covering hundreds of square kilometers. It earned its evocative name from the explorer David Livingstone, who reported seeing nearly 800 elephants during his transit through the area in 1859. Today, it is recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance, serving as a critical refuge for an incredible variety of resident and migratory waterbirds, such as pelicans, kingfishers, and herons. The marsh is characterized by a complex network of channels, reed beds, and lagoons that provide habitat for hippopotamuses and large Nile crocodiles. For the local communities, the marsh is an indispensable lifeline, supporting a major inland fishing industry and providing fertile grounds for recessional agriculture. While the massive elephant herds of the past have largely disappeared, the marsh remains a vital biodiversity hotspot and a natural water filtration system for the Shire River, playing a key role in the regional environmental balance.
