Masoala Peninsula (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Masoala Peninsula in northeastern Madagascar is home to the country's largest national park and one of the most ecologically valuable areas on Earth. Here, primary rainforest meets the Indian Ocean directly, creating a unique ecological interface. Established in 1997, the national park covers around 2,300 square kilometers of land and includes three marine reserves to protect coral reefs and mangroves. The peninsula is the only place where the Red Ruffed Lemur (Varecia rubra) occurs in the wild. Between July and September, Antongil Bay off the coast becomes the stage for an impressive natural spectacle as humpback whales come here to give birth to their calves. The region's extreme humidity promotes explosive plant growth, featuring giant trees, rare ferns, and a multitude of orchids. Access to the peninsula is difficult due to dense vegetation and the lack of roads, mostly achieved by boat, which has helped preserve the original wilderness. Masoala is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Rainforests of the Atsinanana'.
