Andringitra Massif (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Andringitra Massif in southeastern Madagascar is one of the island's most geologically and biologically diverse mountain ranges. It is predominantly composed of hard granite and gneiss dating back to the Precambrian, uplifted through ancient tectonic processes. The massif is the centerpiece of Andringitra National Park, characterized by dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and expansive high-altitude plateaus. Due to extreme variations in elevation, it hosts three distinct ecosystems: tropical rainforest in the lower reaches, montane forests at middle altitudes, and alpine heathlands on the summits. The flora is exceptionally rich in endemics, including numerous species of orchids and aloes. Andringitra is also famous for its unique lemur diversity, such as the ring-tailed lemur, which thrives here in the rocky high-altitude terrain. For hikers and climbers, it gives some of the country's most challenging and spectacular routes, including the ascent of Pic Boby. The region also holds significant cultural value for the Bara and Betsileo people.
