Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve, located just south of Nosy Be, is widely considered one of Madagascar's most successful marine protected areas. This small volcanic island is surrounded by a pristine coral reef that, thanks to its protected status since 2010, is home to an extraordinary density of marine life. Because fishing is strictly prohibited within the reserve's boundaries, fish populations have flourished, allowing snorkelers and divers to encounter sea turtles, leopard sharks, and massive schools of tropical fish in shallow waters. The crystalline turquoise waters frequently offer visibility of up to 30 meters, establishing it as a premier destination for underwater exploration. On the island itself, a historic colonial-era lighthouse provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding archipelago. Terrestrial wildlife is also present, including fruit bats and various endemic reptile species. Rangers strictly monitor the reserve to prevent anchor damage and ensure the long-term health of the fragile coral ecosystems. Geologically, the island is composed of dark basaltic rock, providing a sharp contrast to its brilliant white sand beaches.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to visit Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve is the dry season from May to October, when the water is clear and visibility is excellent. In the rainy season from November to April, visibility can be reduced by plankton, but turtles are often more numerous.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning between 8 and 10 a.m. provides the calmest conditions and the best light for snorkeling. Late afternoon, the water is still warm, but the current can pick up, making swimming more difficult.
📜
Etiquette
The reserve is a marine protected area - collecting shells, corals or sand is prohibited. Snorkelers should not touch or chase the turtles, but watch them from a respectful distance.
🎒
What to bring
Good snorkelling gear (mask, snorkel, fins) is essential, with fins helping you move in the current. A UV-protective long-sleeved shirt and biodegradable sunscreen protect the sensitive corals.
🧭
Getting there

🦌
What to expect
Although the reef is rich in fish and turtles, turtles may be shy at first with heavy activity. Let yourself drift and stay calm - after a few minutes the sea turtles become curious and come closer.
