Visiting
The abandoned ruins of Marodoka Ghost Town are freely accessible and can be visited at any time. Caution is advised as it is an abandoned site - some buildings are at risk of collapse.
Typical hours
There are no opening hours as the site is unguarded. Typically, the ruins are best visited in the morning when the air is still cool and the light is good for photography.
Photography
Photography is allowed all over the site, offering great subjects of weathered walls and tropical vegetation. Watch out for scattered stones and uneven ground as you search for the well-suited composition.
Time needed
Allow about 30-45 minutes for a walk through the ruins. If you are interested in history and details, you can easily spend an hour there.
Combine with
Combine the visit with a trip to the nearby port town of Hell-Ville, which has markets and restaurants. The beaches in northern Nosy Be are also a short drive away.
Getting there
Marodoka is about 8 km east of Hell-Ville on an unpaved road. The ghost town is best reached by a 4x4 vehicle or a motorcycle taxi ("taxi-brousse").
Insider tip
Wear sturdy shoes and long pants because of dense vegetation and possible snakes. Insect repellent is strongly recommended, especially in the morning and evening hours.
