Nosy Mitsio Diving (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Mitsio Archipelago, located north of Nosy Be, is one of Madagascar's most exclusive and pristine diving areas. The group consists of several volcanic islands, including Grande Mitsio, Nosy Lava, and the spectacular basalt formations of Nosy Antaly. Geographically, the archipelago is characterized by the spectacular "Organ Pipes" (Les Orgues), vertical basalt columns rising from the azure waters. Beneath the surface, the area gives exceptional marine biodiversity with intact coral reefs, steep drop-offs, and several shipwrecks. Divers can regularly encounter whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and large schools of barracudas here. Historically, the islands served as a refuge for local Antakarana kings, giving them a special cultural aura. Since the islands are accessible only by boat or helicopter, they have avoided mass tourism, preserving the authenticity of the marine ecosystem. The combination of geological wonders and a rich underwater world makes Nosy Mitsio a world-class destination for discerning divers.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best diving season at Nosy Mitsio is from May to October, when the water is clear and underwater visibility is exceptional. In the rainy season from November to April, visibility can be reduced by plankton and sediments.
🌅
Best time of day
Morning dives between 8 and 11 a.m. often provide the calmest conditions and the best light for colour shots. In the afternoon, currents can strengthen, making navigation harder but also attracting larger fish.
📜
Etiquette
Always dive with an experienced guide, as currents around Nosy Mitsio can change rapidly and good local knowledge is required. Do not touch marine life or corals - leave only bubbles behind.
🎒
What to bring
A full wetsuit (ideally 5 mm) is recommended, as the water can be cooler due to upwellings despite the tropical location. Divers should bring their own underwater torch to better see colours in deeper reef areas.
🧭
Getting there
Nosy Mitsio is reached by boat from Nosy Be - the journey takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the boat and weather. Most dive bases in Nosy Be offer multi-day trips to the remote reefs of Nosy Mitsio.
🦌
What to expect
Diving remote reefs requires good planning - wait for optimal conditions, not every trip brings first-rate visibility. The underwater world is striking, but sometimes you need to linger at a reef section before shy creatures emerge.
