The Messla oil field is located in the southeastern part of the Sirte Basin in Libya, in close proximity to the giant Sarir field. Discovered in 1971, it is noted for its high-quality crude oil reserves trapped within Upper Cretaceous sandstone formations. The field is operated by the Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO) and plays a crucial role in maintaining Libya's overall export capacity. Due to its similar geological characteristics to the nearby Sarir field, Messla shares some shared infrastructure, which enhances operational efficiency. The oil is transported through the AGOCO pipeline network to the Marsa al-Hariga terminal in Tobruk for shipment. Over the decades, the Messla field has demonstrated exceptional reliability, often maintaining steady production levels during periods of national uncertainty. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques, such as water injection to maintain reservoir pressure, are extensively used here to optimize long-term output. Messla remains an indispensable building block of the Libyan oil industry and a key source of revenue for the national treasury.

What is this place?

The Messla oil field in Cyrenaica is a major petroleum deposit in Libya, known for its high-quality crude oil reserves. It has played a central role in Libya's oil industry since its discovery in the 1970s, significantly contributing to the country's export revenues.

Visiting

The oil field is a strictly guarded industrial complex, not open to the public. From the surrounding desert roads, however, one can see the drilling rigs and production facilities in the distance, especially in the clear desert air.

Where to view it

The best view of the oil field is from the main road crossing the Cyrenaica desert, about 10 kilometers before the facility. From a slight elevation, one can see the silhouettes of the drilling rigs and the flares of the refinery.

Local products

The main product is crude oil, transported via pipelines to export terminals. There are no direct retail outlets for tourists in the region; however, in the souks of Benghazi and Tobruk, desert handicrafts can be purchased.

Oil extraction is continuous and active year-round, interrupted only by occasional maintenance work. Production may be slightly reduced in the hot summer months due to heat and logistical challenges.
