Awjila Old Mosque (Libya)

Weather…

The Atiq Mosque of Awjila is considered one of the oldest and architecturally most unique mosques in the entire Sahara. It is located in one of Libya's oldest oases, which was already mentioned in the writings of Herodotus. The most striking feature of the mosque is its nine prominent, conical domes made of mud-brick and lime plaster. This special construction method provides natural ventilation and cooling for the interior, which is vital in the extreme desert heat. The mosque is believed to have been built in the 12th century, though some foundations may be even older. For centuries, it served as a spiritual anchor point for caravans on the route between Egypt and the Maghreb. The simple white facade and unusual silhouette make it a masterpiece of Saharan vernacular architecture. Despite renovations, the mosque has retained its original character and remains an active center of prayer and a proud symbol of the region's long Islamic history.
