Abai-Shakarim Mausoleum (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The Abai-Shakarim memorial complex is situated in Zhidebay, at the heart of the Kazakh steppe, and is dedicated to the great poet Abai Kunanbaiuly and his nephew, the philosopher Shakarim Kudaiberdiuly. Completed in 1995 to mark the 150th anniversary of Abai's birth, the complex is a masterpiece of modern Kazakh architecture. It consists of two imposing minaret-like mausoleums standing on a massive raised platform. Abai's mausoleum reaches a height of 32.5 meters, while Shakarim's stands at 37 meters. The shapes of the structures resemble traditional Kazakh headwear and symbolize the spiritual stature of these two intellectuals. The site is regarded as a spiritual center of Kazakhstan, as Abai is revered as the founder of modern Kazakh literature and language. The complex also includes a mosque and a museum providing deep insights into the lives and literary legacies of these influential figures.
