Semey, formerly known as Semipalatinsk, is located in eastern Kazakhstan on the banks of the Irtysh River and is widely regarded as the cultural heart of the nation. The city was founded in 1718 as a Russian frontier fortress and soon flourished into a vital trading post connecting Russia, China, and Central Asia. Semey is inextricably linked to the Kazakh enlightenment, as it was the place of work for the great poet Abai Kunanbayuly and where the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky spent his years in exile. During the 20th century, the city gained somber notoriety due to its proximity to the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, where hundreds of Soviet nuclear tests were conducted between 1949 and 1989. Following the site's closure by President Nazarbayev in 1991, Semey has become a symbol of global nuclear disarmament. Today, the city is a major educational and commercial hub, featuring impressive architecture that blends classicist and modern styles, and is home to one of the longest suspension bridges in Central Asia.
