Saraichik Ruins (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

Saraichik was one of the most significant cities of the medieval Golden Horde and later served as the capital of the Nogai Horde. The ruins are located on the right bank of the Ural River, approximately 50 kilometers north of the modern city of Atyrau. Established in the 13th century, the city grew into a vital trade hub on the Silk Road, connecting Europe with Central Asia and China. Archaeological excavations have revealed a highly developed urban infrastructure, including water supply and sewage systems made of fired clay pipes. The city was a major religious center and functioned as the burial ground for seven khans of the Golden Horde. In 1580, Saraichik was largely destroyed by Ural Cossacks, leading to its eventual abandonment. Today, the site is a state historical and cultural museum-reserve, preserving the legacy of the region's nomadic and sedentary civilizations.
