The Atyrau Oil Refinery is the oldest industrial oil processing plant in Kazakhstan and holds high historical significance. Founded in 1945 during the final phase of World War II, it was originally built using equipment supplied from the USA under the Lend-Lease Act. Today, the refinery is an ultra-modern complex in the west of the country, situated directly on the Ural River, and is controlled by KazMunayGas. Due to its proximity to the vast oil fields of the Caspian Sea, such as Tengiz and Kashagan, its strategic value is inestimable. Over the last two decades, the plant has been almost completely reconstructed, with new catalytic cracking and aromatics production units added. This enabled the transition to the production of ecologically cleaner fuels. The refinery is also the sole producer of benzene and paraxylene in Kazakhstan, making it the centerpiece of the national petrochemical industry. Its capacity today stands at over 5.5 million tons per year.
