Burabay National Park is located in the Akmola Region of northern Kazakhstan and was officially established in 2000. Covering approximately 1,300 square kilometers, the area is widely known as the 'Kazakh Switzerland' due to its scenic beauty. The landscape is characterized by a combination of dense coniferous forests, unique granite rock formations, and 14 large lakes, including Lake Burabay and Lake Shchuchye. Geologically, it is part of the Kazakh Upland, where the weathering of granite has created iconic landmarks such as the 'Okzhetpes' rock. Beyond its ecological importance as a habitat for deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species, the park is a major hub for tourism in Kazakhstan. Historically, the region was an important site for Kazakh khans and is steeped in local legends and folklore.

The sprawling nature park is highly and conveniently accessible by direct train routes or by modern car from the bustling capital city of Astana, with remarkably well-paved roads leading directly into the main resort areas and trailheads.

Warm summer is by far the most popular time for outdoor swimming and lush hiking, though the snowy winter magically transforms the park into a beautiful, highly sought-after destination for peaceful cross-country skiing and winter walks.

The striking landscape features a delightfully diverse mix of smoothly paved walking paths around the clear lakes and significantly more rugged, rocky trails leading sharply up through the incredibly dense, wonderfully aromatic pine forests.

Depending largely on the chosen season, visitors will absolutely need either light, breathable summer activewear or serious, heavy winter thermal gear, always consistently accompanied by genuinely sturdy outdoor shoes for the very rocky paths.

Numerous properly designated and secure parking areas are readily available completely near the main popular lakes, large resort hotels, and bustling visitor centers, though they can realistically fill up quite quickly on busy summer weekends.
