Pavlodar, a significant industrial city in northeastern Kazakhstan, is situated on the right bank of the Irtysh River within the fertile West Siberian Plain. The city was founded in 1720 as a Russian military outpost called Koryakovsky to safeguard the salt extraction activities at nearby lakes. In 1861, the settlement was granted city status and renamed Pavlodar in honor of the newborn Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich. During the Soviet era, the city underwent rapid transformation into a heavy industrial hub, specifically excelling in mechanical engineering and aluminum production, bolstered by access to inexpensive energy from the Ekibastuz coal basin. Pavlodar's architecture features a mix of historical brick buildings from the Tsarist era and monumental Soviet-style apartment blocks. Today, the city is a major transport junction with one of the largest river ports in Central Asia and remains a cultural center famous for its museums and one of the most scenic riverfront promenades along the Irtysh.
