Ekibastuz is a major industrial city in the Pavlodar Region of northeastern Kazakhstan, established in the late 19th century following the discovery of vast coal deposits. The settlement officially attained city status in 1957, subsequently evolving into one of the most critical energy hubs of the Soviet Union. The city is globally renowned for the Bogatyr open-pit coal mine, which at one point was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest of its kind on the planet. Beyond mining, the city's skyline is dominated by the GRES-1 and GRES-2 power stations, with the latter featuring a chimney that stands 419.7 meters tall, making it the tallest free-standing chimney in the world. Geographically located in an arid steppe zone, the area experiences extreme continental climate conditions with harsh winters and hot summers. Today, Ekibastuz remains a strategic asset for Kazakhstan's economy, generating a significant portion of the nation's total electricity output.
