🍽 Food
Try the famous swordfish sandwich at the kiosks along the seafront promenade.
Homemade pasta, often served with a savory sauce of swordfish and eggplant in the trattorias of Chianalea.
Although originating from nearby Pizzo, you'll find this delicious chocolate ice cream in most gelaterias on the square.

Look for hand-painted ceramic plates and bowls in the small shops of the upper town.
Buy local chili oil or hot sauces as a fiery souvenir from the food stores in the center.
The ancient walls of the castle offer not just history, but a peaceful atmosphere high above the beach.

Scilla is one of Calabria's most enchanting coastal towns, located at the entrance to the Strait of Messina. Steeped in Greek mythology, it was supposedly the home of the monster Scylla, who guarded the narrow channel opposite Charybdis in Sicily. The town's most atmospheric district is Chianalea, known as the 'Venice of the South' because the houses are built directly on the water's edge, with fishing boats moored right at the doorsteps. The narrow, winding alleys of Chianalea are filled with the scent of the sea and the sound of waves hitting the rocks. The town is dominated by the Ruffo Castle, an imposing fortress perched on a cliff that separates the two main bays. The castle has wide-open views of the Calabrian coastline and across the water to the Aeolian Islands. Below the castle lies Marina Grande, a wide pebble beach with crystal-clear water popular for swimming. Scilla is also famous for its centuries-old tradition of swordfish hunting using unique 'passerelle' boats with tall observation masts. Consequently, swordfish is the centerpiece of local cuisine, often served fresh in seaside trattorias. Scilla is conveniently reachable by train from Reggio Calabria or by car via the A2 motorway. Its blend of mythic history, traditional fishing culture, and remarkable sea views makes it a highlight of any trip to Southern Italy.
