Maiella National Park (Italy)

Weather…

The Maiella National Park is located in the heart of the Abruzzo region, encompassing the majestic Maiella limestone massif and the adjacent Morrone and Pizzi mountains. Established in 1991, the park covers about 74,000 hectares and is characterized by its rugged peaks, vast plateaus, and deep canyons. Its highest point is Monte Amaro at 2,793 meters, making it the second-highest peak in the Apennines. The park is a vital sanctuary for Italian wildlife, hosting stable populations of the Apennine wolf and the Marsican brown bear, as well as the largest herd of Abruzzo chamois in Central Italy. Botanically, the Maiella is a biodiversity hotspot, containing roughly one-third of the entire Italian flora, including many endemic species. Cultural heritage is equally significant, with numerous hermitages carved into the rock faces and ancient pastoral dry-stone structures. Today, the park is designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, recognizing its extraordinary geological history and its deep connection between nature and human history.
