Fermo is situated on the summit and slopes of Mount Sàbulo in the Marche region, approximately six kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The city has ancient origins, established as the Roman colony Firmum Picenum in 264 BC, a heritage still evident in the massive Roman cisterns dating from the 1st century AD. This underground engineering marvel consists of 30 chambers covering 2,200 square meters and is among the best-preserved examples of its kind in Italy. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands at the highest point of the city, featuring a Romanesque-Gothic facade completed in 1227. The civic heart is the Piazza del Popolo, bordered by the 13th-century Palazzo dei Priori, which now houses the municipal art gallery and a famous 1713 terrestrial globe. For centuries, Fermo served as a major administrative and educational hub within the Papal States, maintaining its medieval layout and a wealth of Renaissance palaces.
