Settecannoli is a district on the eastern coastline of Palermo, rich in history. Its name, meaning 'seven spouts', derives from an old fountain. The district's jewel is the Ponte dell'Ammiraglio, an impressive 12th-century Norman bridge declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Arab-Norman Palermo route. Although the Oreto river it once spanned has been diverted, the bridge now stands in a garden as a remarkable testament to medieval engineering. The district has a more industrial and residential character but provides an authentic glimpse into Palermitan life away from the main tourist hubs. Nearby, visitors can enjoy the spirited markets and street food for which Palermo is famous, including arancini and pani ca' meusa. Settecannoli is easily reachable from Palermo's city center by bus or tram, making it a worthwhile detour for history enthusiasts. A visit to the Ponte dell'Ammiraglio combines well with exploring other Norman sites nearby, such as the Church of San Cataldo. The best time to visit is year-round, but spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for walking and exploring this fascinating part of Sicily.
