💡 Tips

  • Visit the Parco Minerario (Mining Park) in the early morning to avoid the intense midday sun on the open slopes.
  • The sparkling black sand on Topinetti beach is beautiful but gets incredibly hot; always bring thick-soled flip-flops.
  • Parking in the upper village (Rio nell'Elba) is very limited; leave your car in the designated lots outside the historic center.
  • Take the scenic but winding coastal road from Porto Azzurro slowly, as locals drive fast and the curves are blind.

The municipality of Rio was established in 2018 through the administrative merger of Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba on the eastern side of Elba Island. This area is historically defined by its extensive iron ore mining operations, which ceased in the late 20th century. The landscape of the eastern coast reveals the geological legacy of the mines, with soil and sand often displaying red and black hues. The Parco Minerario has guided tours through the old excavation sites. Along the coast, "Spiaggia Cala Seregola" and "Spiaggia dei Topinetti" feature dark, mineral-rich sand that sparkles in the sun. To the north, the port village of Cavo provides ferry connections to Piombino. Around this northern tip, visitors can access "Spiaggia di Frugoso", "Spiaggia di Cavo", and "Spiaggia del Direttore". Further south, "Spiaggia di Ortano" provides a wider pebble shore surrounded by steep, green hills.
