Moydrum Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Moydrum Castle is the atmospheric remains of a Gothic Revival mansion located near Athlone in County Westmeath. Commissioned in 1814 for William Handcock, the 1st Baron Castlemaine, the grand residence was designed by architect Richard Morrison to reflect the romantic architectural trends of the early 19th century. The estate featured ornate crenellations, slender towers, and pointed-arch windows, establishing it as a centerpiece of the anglo-irish landed gentry's social life. However, its splendor was short-lived; during the Irish War of Independence, the castle was deliberately set ablaze by the IRA on July 3, 1921. This action was taken in retaliation for the burning of local farmhouses by British forces earlier that day. The catastrophic fire gutted the interior, leaving only the skeletal limestone shell that survives today. In the 1980s, the ruin gained international cultural significance when it appeared on the cover of U2’s studio album, 'The Unforgettable Fire.' It remains a poignant, ivy-covered monument to Ireland's turbulent transition to independence.
