Ballymore Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Ballymore Castle, situated in eastern County Galway near Lawrencetown, is a significant example of a late 16th-century Irish tower house. Built around 1585 by John Lawrence, the structure served as the principal seat of the Lawrence family for over three centuries before passing to the Ussher family in the 19th century. The architectural core consists of a four-story tower house, which was significantly augmented in the early 1800s by an adjacent manor house built in the Gothic Revival style, creating a striking visual contrast between fortification and residence. Historically, the castle reflects the stabilization of settler families following the Elizabethan conquest of Ireland and the complex land ownership shifts of the 17th century. Remarkably, the Lawrences managed to retain their lands during the Cromwellian confiscations, a rarity for Catholic landowners of that era. Today, the castle remains a private residence, standing as a well-preserved monument to the regional evolution of Irish domestic and defensive architecture.
