Enniskillen Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Enniskillen Castle, located in County Fermanagh, was built in the 16th century by the Maguire clan and was strategically vital for controlling the waterway between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The fortress became a central theater during the Nine Years' War and the Plantation of Ulster in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Following its capture by English forces in 1594, the castle was expanded, with the distinctive Watergate featuring twin round turrets added in the 17th century. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as a major military barracks and was the birthplace of the famous 'Inniskilling Fusiliers' and 'Inniskilling Dragoons' regiments. Today, the complex houses the Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum, which comprehensively present the military and civilian history of the region. Its location on the River Erne and the architectural layers from various centuries make it a key monument of Irish history.
