Newtownards is situated at the northern tip of Strangford Lough in County Down, boasting a settlement history spanning over 800 years. In 1244, a Dominican friary was established here, the ruins of which remain a prominent historical site known as Newtownards Priory. A defining landmark of the area is Scrabo Tower, erected in 1857 atop an extinct volcanic plug to commemorate the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. Historically, the town functioned as a significant hub for linen weaving and regional trade, centered around its expansive market square. The Town Hall, an elegant Georgian structure dating from 1770, remains a centerpiece of the local architecture and civic life. Its location on the shores of Strangford Lough, a designated Area of Special Scientific Interest, contributes to the rich ecological diversity and attracts numerous birdwatchers. Today, Newtownards is a thriving commuter town with strong economic and social links to nearby Belfast, supporting a wide range of retail and service industries.
