Dunmanway is a historic market town located in the heart of West Cork, positioned near the headwaters of the River Bandon. Established in the late 17th century, the town was initially developed as a center for the linen industry, supported by the arrival of specialized settlers. Dunmanway is most famous across Ireland as the birthplace of Sam Maguire, a key figure in the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the namesake of the Sam Maguire Cup, the ultimate trophy in Gaelic Football. The town's geography, surrounded by undulating hills and several scenic lakes like Lakemanagh, makes it a strategic hub for exploring the West Cork countryside. The town center features a bronze statue of Maguire and retains a traditional market-town atmosphere with its local storefronts and community spirit. Historically, Dunmanway was a vital link on the Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway, and today it remains an important agricultural and residential center for the region.
