Charleville, historically known as Rath Luirc, is a significant market town located in North County Cork, within the fertile region of the Golden Vale. The town was formally established in 1661 by Roger Boyle, the 1st Earl of Orrery, who named it in honor of King Charles II of England. Its strategic position on the main route between the cities of Cork and Limerick facilitated its growth as a major commercial and agricultural hub. During the 20th century, Charleville became synonymous with the Irish dairy industry, serving as the birthplace of the processing facilities that eventually evolved into the Kerry Group. The urban layout retains much of its 17th-century character, complemented by Victorian architectural features seen in the local courthouse and religious structures. Today, the town functions as a bustling regional center with a robust industrial base and a population that maintains strong ties to the surrounding farming hinterland.
