Ballycarbery Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Ballycarbery Castle is a strikingly scenic, ivy-clad ruin located near the water’s edge near Cahersiveen on the Iveragh Peninsula, County Kerry. The present tower house structure dates primarily to the 16th century, though archaeological evidence suggests a fortification has existed on this strategic site since at least the late 1300s. For generations, it served as the principal seat of the McCarthy Mor clan, later occupied by the O’Connells as wardens of the fortress. Architecturally, the castle demonstrates the robustness of Gaelic military engineering, featuring thick limestone walls and narrow arrow loops designed to overlook the Atlantic approach. Its decline began in 1652 during the Cromwellian conquest when parliamentary forces used heavy artillery to breach the walls, rendering the stronghold indefensible. Since that time, the castle has remained abandoned, gradually reclaimed by nature. Although structural instability prevents public entry into the interior, Ballycarbery remains a highlight for visitors to the Ring of Kerry, admired for its evocative silhouette against the coastal landscape.
