Baiji is located in the Saladin Governorate on the west bank of the Tigris, about 210 kilometers north of Baghdad. The city is primarily known as one of Iraq's most important industrial centers, as it houses the largest oil refinery in the country. Due to this strategic importance, Baiji was the scene of intense fighting in recent history, leading to significant destruction of infrastructure. Geographically, the city sits at a major transportation hub where the railway line and the main highway between Baghdad and Mosul intersect. In addition to petrochemistry, power generation plays a central role, with the local power station serving a large part of the region. The surrounding landscape is characterized by arid plains, but the proximity to the Tigris allows for localized agriculture. After years of conflict, efforts today focus on rebuilding industrial capacities to support the country's economic stability.
