Dur-Kurigalzu
Dur-Kurigalzu, known today as Aqar Quf, was the capital city of the Kassite dynasty in ancient Mesopotamia, situated about 30 kilometers west of Baghdad. Founded in the 14th century BC by King Kurigalzu I, the city was designed to cement Kassite authority over Babylonia. The most striking feature of the site is the massive ziggurat dedicated to the god Enlil, which originally rose to an estimated height of over 50 meters. The core of the structure is built from sun-dried mud bricks, stabilized with layers of reed mats and ropes every few courses, a characteristic construction technique of the era that has aided its survival. Beyond the ziggurat, the city included an extensive palace complex featuring elaborate murals and administrative buildings. Although the city declined after the fall of the Kassite dynasty in the 12th century BC, its ruins remained a prominent landmark in the Mesopotamian plain for centuries. Today, the site provides crucial archaeological evidence for the poorly documented era of Kassite rule and their contributions to Mesopotamian culture.
