The complex contains the tombs of the seventh and ninth Imams, Musa al-Kadhim and Muhammad al-Jawad, who died in 799 and 835. The core of the current structure was rebuilt in the early 16th century during the reign of the Safavid Shah Ismail I. The building is characterized by two massive domes and four 35-meter-tall minarets, which were covered with thick gold plates in 1881. The interior walls feature intricate glass mosaics, while the ceilings are decorated with wood carvings and calligraphy. The religious complex spans an area of 26,000 square meters, accommodating millions of pilgrims annually during major religious observances.
